Bentley Mulsanne Turbo

The Bentley Mulsanne Turbo, introduced in 1982 and produced until 1985, stands as a significant milestone in the history of Bentley, marking a pivotal shift in the brand's image. This model heralded Bentley's renaissance as a distinct marque, separating its identity from Rolls-Royce. The Mulsanne Turbo, a full-size luxury sedan, was not just a symbol of luxury but also a testament to enhanced power and performance. • Engine: The heart of the Mulsanne Turbo is a 6.75-liter V8 engine, augmented with a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger. This combination brought about a 50% increase in engine power, estimated to be around 300 bhp. It featured an aluminium-silicon alloy cylinder head and a Solex 4-barrel downdraught carburettor.
• Performance: The turbocharged engine enabled the Mulsanne Turbo to reach a top speed of 135 mph, making it comparable to contemporary supercars like the Aston Martin Lagonda and Ferrari 400i.
• Transmission: Power was managed through a 3-speed automatic gearbox, ensuring a smooth and responsive driving experience.
• Suspension and Brakes: The vehicle was equipped with independent suspension, including front and rear coil springs, and Girling hydraulic self-levelling ride control at the rear. Braking was managed by front ventilated disc brakes and plain rear discs.
• Interior: The Mulsanne Turbo's cabin reflected Bentley's luxury ethos, with highly polished walnut veneers, flawless leather upholstery, and pure wool carpets and headlining.
• Dimensions and Tyres: It had a wheelbase of 3,061 mm (120.5 in), with a long wheelbase version measuring 3,161 mm (124.5 in). The car was fitted with tyres sized 235/70VR15.
• Production: In its production span, Bentley manufactured 498 standard wheelbase and 18 long-wheelbase Mulsanne Turbos before the model gave way to the Bentley Turbo R in 1985.
