Rolls-Royce Corniche Engine & Gearbox Service : Video Tutorial (Part 1)

Gary Mavers (Classic Obsession) completes a full service on his Rolls-Royce Corniche in a two part video feature. Part 1 is here and Gary has been busy ordering bits from IntroCar again including Prestige Parts engine and gearbox service kits.

Classic Obsession's Rolls-Royce Corniche : Oil Leaks!

Gary identifies two oil leak sites underneath his Corniche – a familiar sight for owners of these classics. It’s tempting to sometimes neglect and put a pan underneath but Gary decides to identify the area and get a nice clean sump (and garage floor!) prior to starting on the service kits.

He identifies that there are two to three leaks at the same time potentially coming from the Rocker Cover Gasket.

Removal of the Rocker Cover

Despite the fact that it is a huge job to remove the carburettor body and get to the bottom of the leak, Gary shows the full process in depth to remove the rocker cover and gasket including:

  • Taking off the carburettors off
  • Undoing the fuel lines
  • Removing the Air Intake
  • Undoing the main carburettor bolt
  • Releasing the breather pipe, the braider pipe, any air pipes or fuel return pipes
  • ...and the rest!

*Includes a tip on cleaning the Breather Unit!

Cleaning and Preparing the Rocker Cover

Gary finds that the plastic inserts have broken up and fallen into the engine and sees why many change from the cork gasket to the silicon as he identifies multiple splits and broken areas in the gasket in place on his Corniche.

After a perfect clean with the utmost attention to detail (see video!), replacement of a thicker silicone gasket and new inserts, the arduous task of replacing everything begins!

*Includes a tip on keeping the gasket in place for re-insertion!!!

Unboxing of the Prestige Parts Service Kit

For his Rolls-Royce Corniche, Gary ordered SERVICEKIT1A which is a 48,000 mile / 80,000 km service kit for SY series cars equipped with single point ignition distributors including Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (chassis 08742-22117), Silver Shadow 2-Door (chassis 08742-09769), Corniche (chassis 09770-22582) and Bentley T1 (chassis 08742-22117) models. For more Service Kit options visit our Service Kits page.

“It’s a really comprehensive kit, all from IntroCar, all available and all the best quality stuff and with a 3 year warranty on everything!”

Performing the Service!

Gary commences the replacements of the service kit item in steps starting with the Carburetor filters, followed by the BPR5ES Spark Plugs (SPC3087), the 88 degree celcius Thermostat (UE36600) and the Air Filter UE36200. During the service Gary points out tips for each part of the process.

With everything complete on the top half of the car that's it for this episode. In the next episode Gary completes the next part of the service underneath the car!
