Brake Pump Strip Down: Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Shadow II & Bentley T1/T2

Welcome to another highly specialized tutorial from IntroCar. In Part 1 of this 3-part series, we focus on the precise dismantling of a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Brake Pump. This information is crucial for those dealing with models such as the Rolls-Royce Corniche, Silver Wraith II, as well as the Bentley T1 & T2. For a complete visual guide watch the accompanying video here.

Required Tools and Preparation

Your toolkit should include a brake pump spanner, a set of circlip pliers, and a reliable vise. Having these tools at the ready ensures that you can proceed without unnecessary interruptions.

Unscrewing the Top Adapter

After removing the shroud and the circlip securing it, the next step involves unscrewing the top adapter. It is vital to employ the brake pump spanner at the carsonations located at the bottom of the pump. Using a socket, engage these teeth to facilitate proper disengagement of the top adapter.

Chamfered Washer and Non-Return Valve

Upon removing the top adapter, you'll find a chamfered washer directly underneath, which functions as a sealing mechanism for the non-return valve. Use a screwdriver to carefully dislodge the chamfered washer. This action will free the non-return valve and underlying valve washer and spacer washer. These components are crucial for setting the proper gap between the wavy washer and the valve washer.

Piston and Barrel Disassembly

Once the top components are removed, turn your attention to the piston and barrel assembly. A circlip secures the piston, which should be examined for free movement. Upon confirming that the piston moves freely, proceed to remove the circlip.

Be especially cautious while extracting the barrel and piston. These components are a match-ground assembly with tight tolerances. Any scoring or damages can lead to pump malfunctions. Carefully inspect the piston and barrel for wear or damage to ensure smooth operation during reassembly.

Non-Return Valve Assembly

For the final part of the dismantling process, address the non-return valve assembly. Utilize a smaller set of circlip pliers to remove the circlip effectively. Once the circlip is removed, the remaining components can be easily extracted.

Hydraulic Brake Pump Assembly UE40534HB

This is the hydraulic brake pump situated on the top of the engine on the valley cover between the cylinder heads. There are two per car, feeding the two hydraulic systems that pressurise the hydraulic braking and suspension/ride height systems.

This brake pump is for cars using RR363 synthetic hydraulic fluid, as per the applications below.
